You’ll likely have another tool for managing weeds in 2016 with Syngenta’s Acuron Flexi corn herbicide, pending regulatory approval.
Syngenta announced the name of this herbicide premix at this week’s Agricultural Media Summit in Scottsdale, Arizona. Acuron Flexi is similar to Syngenta’s Acuron herbicide, minus the atrazine. It’s for those areas where atrazine can’t be applied or where atrazine carryover concerns exist, says Ryan Lins, a Syngenta research and development scientist based in Minnesota.
Lack of carryover potential will give farmers choices for a variety of crops the following year. It also gives farmers another tool to manage tough weeds like waterhemp, giant ragweed, and Palmer amaranth that resist one or more herbicide modes of action.
Acuron Flexi contains three active ingredients that include:
• Bicyclopyrone (also major active ingredient in Acuron). Syngenta officials say this gives burndown plus residual for control of large-seeded broadleaves.
• Mesotrione (Callisto). This also is for burndown and residual control of broadleaves.
• S-metolachlor (Dual II Magnum). This gives residual control of annual grasses and small-seeded broadleaves.
Acuron Flexi also contains Benoxacor corn safener.
Lins adds that while Acuron Flexi does not contain atrazine or glyphosate, these compounds can be tank-mixed with Acuron Flexi if farmers or applicators choose.
Acuron Flexi will be labeled for application from 28 days preplant – including burndown — up to 30-inch-high corn.
The length of residual depends on factors like environmental conditions, but it has lasted up to 56 days in Syngenta tests.
Regulatory approval is expected in time for the 2016 growing season.
